The Runner

  • Every runner will have an injury at some point in their life, whether it is a small nag or a training-limiting, severe pain.
  • Most runners do not know what pain is appropriate to run through and what pain might cause irrevocable damage.
  • Many runners do not know how to appropriately return to running or increase mileage and distance following a rest period.
  • Some runners like to do the same training every year, while others switch philosophies every few months; knowing the proper training stimulus is key to improving and staying injury-free.
  • Some runners like to do the same training every year, while others switch philosophies every few months; knowing the proper training stimulus is key to improving and staying injury-free.
  • More and more people are turning to running for fitness and are not sure how to begin or progress their training.

Running Injuries & Gait Re-Training Program

This program is designed to evaluate and rehabilitate the injured runner though physical therapy. This program may also incorporate the use of video analysis feedback for the gait re-training program to help decrease the risk of injury as the patient returns to running.

We also offer screenings that help to prevent future injuries and improve running efficiency. You can read more about this program by viewing the Gait Analysis and Injury Screen Flyer.

Importance of Video Analysis

  • Each person has their own “fingerprint” of running
  • Abnormal running patterns can carry over into all functional activities, resulting in injury
  • With injury, compensation patterns can develop creating secondary injuries and further dysfunction
  • Video analysis permits us to view and assess, in detail, running form and compensation patterns that cannot necessarily be seen well in real-time
  • Information gained from video analysis will be used to construct the appropriate exercise program for the patient and used as a feedback tool with gait re-training

Gait Re-Training

Gait re-training is a program that is incorporated into the patient’s physical therapy as their injury resolves. Information gained from the patient’s physical therapy examination, combined with a detailed assessment through video analysis, will provide multiple levels of feedback. This feedback may help to decrease the risk of re-injury by focusing on running mechanics and appropriate loading to help avoid compensation patterns that lead to injury.

Style & Technique

Due to injury, some runners may wish to change their form and try something new/different. In order to make these changes appropriately, they should be formally re-trained with the proper feedback and progression.
